Kilmainham Gaol is one of the largest unoccupied jails in Europe.

Some famous names that were held here were Robert Emmet, Anne Devlin, Countess Markievicz and the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, 14 who were executed by firing squad in the Stonebreakers yard. Kilmainham Gaol was opened in 1796 and then closed in 1924 but was preserved as a national monument in the 1960s.
Kilmainham Gaol offers guided tours only. The tour lasts 60 minutes and at the end of the tour there is a museum where you can explore more of the gaols history.
