Kilmainham Gaol near The Grafton Hotel
A short walk away from The Grafton Hotel, Kilmainham Gaol is one of Dublin’s top tourist attractions. On your visit you will discover the stories of people held here as ordinary criminals alongside those who fought for Irish Independence.
Some famous names that were held here were Robert Emmet, Anne Devlin, Countess Markievicz and the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, 14 who were executed by firing squad in the Stonebreakers yard. Kilmainham Gaol was opened in 1796 and then closed in 1924 but was preserved as a national monument in the 1960s.
Kilmainham Gaol offers guided tours only. The tour lasts 60 minutes and at the end of the tour there is a museum where you can explore more of the gaols history.
